Suburban lots, serious trees

Landscaping & tree care in Olney

Olney sits on the edge of the county's rural reserve, which gives it bigger gardens and far more standing timber than its neighbours.

DEL Landscapes project photography near Olney, Montgomery County

Olney gardens tend to back onto woodland, and a wood on your boundary is both the reason the property is lovely and the source of most of the calls we get: a dead ash over the garden room, a poplar dropping limbs, a boundary line of trees that nobody has looked at in twenty years.

It is also a part of the county where deer pressure genuinely dictates the planting plan. There is little point designing a border that will be eaten by September. We plan Olney plantings around what actually survives here, and say so plainly when a client asks for something that will not.

What we do in Olney

Local rules worth knowing

What governs work in Olney.

01

Ask any tree company for their licence number

Maryland requires commercial roadside tree work to be carried out under a Licensed Tree Expert, and a firm doing the physical work must have at least one on staff. The DNR Forest Service licenses LTEs on experience, education and an examination. Ours is #1798. It is a fair question to ask anyone quoting you tree work.

02

Trees along the road are not yours to cut

Under Maryland's Roadside Tree Law (Natural Resources Article §§5-401–5-411) any planting, pruning or removal of a tree in the public road right-of-way needs a permit from the Maryland DNR Forest Service first — and the work has to be done under the direction of a Licensed Tree Expert. A permit is not permission from the tree's owner: that comes separately from the State Highway Administration, the county, or the municipality. We hold Maryland Tree Expert License #1798 and handle the permit as part of the job.

Regulations change. These notes summarise published guidance from the agencies named and are a starting point, not legal advice — we confirm the current position for your specific property before any permit-affecting work begins.

Questions we get asked in Olney

Straight answers.

What plants survive deer in Olney?

No plant is genuinely deer-proof in a hard winter, but planting is far more likely to establish if the structure of a border is built from things deer browse last rather than first. We plan around that instead of replacing the same shrubs every spring.

Do you remove dead trees at the back of a wooded Olney garden?

Yes. Access is the variable that decides the price — whether we can get equipment to the tree or whether it has to be climbed and rigged out in pieces. We look before quoting.
